The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called for stronger collaboration with community-based organizations in a renewed effort to combat the growing menace of drug abuse in society.

This appeal was made during a courtesy visit by NDLEA officials to a foundation, where the agency emphasized that the fight against drug abuse cannot be won in isolation. The delegation, led by the State Deputy Commandant, Usaini Umar, conveyed the goodwill of their Commander and highlighted the urgent need for multi-stakeholder engagement.

Speaking during the meeting, NDLEA representatives described drug abuse as a major societal challenge and a key driver of criminal activities. They stressed the importance of partnerships, particularly in the areas of sensitization and advocacy, to curb the spread of substance abuse across communities.

According to the agency, its ongoing efforts include grassroots sensitization campaigns on the dangers of drug abuse, as well as counseling and rehabilitation services through a specialized unit focused on group intervention. These initiatives target schools, workplaces, markets, and motor parks, aiming to reach vulnerable populations directly.

The NDLEA delegation expressed confidence that collaboration with the foundation would help expand outreach to grassroots communities. They also pledged their readiness to support the foundation by providing officers to deliver lectures and awareness programs whenever required.

The agency further highlighted the annual International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, celebrated every June 26. Activities marking the event typically span a week and include media engagements, community outreach, and a grand finale lecture involving students, religious institutions, and the general public. NDLEA noted that the foundation would be formally invited to participate in this year’s events.

In response, the foundation’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Abubakar Mohammed Yanmaza, welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the organization’s openness to partnerships aligned with its thematic focus areas. He emphasized the need for joint efforts in community development, noting that drug abuse remains a significant factor undermining youth potential.

Yanmaza also requested the designation of a focal person within NDLEA to facilitate coordination on future programs and interventions.

As part of the visit, the NDLEA delegation presented an award and other materials to the foundation, as directed by their Commander, in recognition of its contributions and potential role in advancing the anti-drug campaign.

The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism about building a sustainable partnership to address drug abuse and promote healthier communities.
